French antique three piece marble and bronze clock set
By Lemerle-Charpentier & Compagnie (French, fl. 1870-1890)
£32,000
This exquisite French antique marble, gilt and patinated bronze clock set features a beautiful full length figure of the Greek goddess of hunting, Diana.
The clock set comprises a central clock and a pair of flanking seven light candelabra. The central clock is set on an oval shaped red marble plinth on gilt bronze feet. To the front of the base there is a bronze relief panel depicting classical figures. The red marble circular dial of the clock contains a partially rubbed maker's signature for Lemerle Charpentier & Compagnie. The dial is set within a gilt bronze frame and it is encased within a cylindrical pillar form patinated bronze case which is mounted with gilt bronze floral decorations and surmounted by a gilt bronze jardiniere. On one side of the clock case there is a gilt bronze quiver and torch, and on the other side stands the full length female classical figure of Diana, the goddess of hunting, shown holding a torch.
The pair of candelabra are similarly decorated, and feature vase-form patinated bronze supports with classical relief panels. Above the supports are seven scrolling branches, leading to lights with gilt bronze circular drip pans. The candelabra are surmounted by a patinated bronze removable finial in the form of a bird. The clock set is the work of the French firm Lemerle-Charpentier & Cie, who were famed in the late 19th Century for their fine bronze clocks and clock garnitures.
