This coffee table is a fine example of ‘antler-seat furniture’, a style of furniture particularly popular in Germany during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The table features three legs crafted from interwoven antlers and a circular tabletop finished with green velvet.
The earliest example of furniture made from antlers is a chandelier in the Cathedral at Erfurt, which dates to the 15th Century. Although such pieces were popular over the following centuries, the first known suite of furniture made from antlers dates only to about 1830. The popularity of antler-seat suites soared after the Great Exhibition of 1851, wherein antler furniture featured prominently.
The present table can be matched with a sofa and a pair of side chairs to form a full suite.
