This wonderful pair of chairs is a superb example of antler-seat furniture, a style of furniture associated with Germany that dates to the 15th Century.
This pair of side chairs is a fine example of German antler-seat furniture. Each chair features a backrest, armrests, and legs formed from elaborately crossed antlers. The seat cushion and backrest cushion of each are finely finished with floral upholstery.
The earliest extant example of furniture made from antlers is a chandelier in the Cathedral at Erfurt, which dates to the 15th Century. Although such pieces were popular over the following centuries, the first known suite of furniture made from antlers dates only to about 1830. The popularity of antler-seat suites soared after the Great Exhibition of 1851, wherein antler furniture featured prominently.
The pair of side chairs can be combined with a matching sofa, available here, and a coffee table, available here.
