Gold leaf

Gold leaf refers to gold that has been hammered into thin sheets, usually to be layered over a surface.

Gold leaf is traditionally used to produce artworks decorated with fine golden gilt. In ancient Classical and Byzantine times, gold leaf was used for embellishing vessels, statues and religious icons, as well as jewellery and precious objects.
