This torchère, crafted from carved giltwood, is a fine example of Louis XVI style Neoclassicism. The torchère is raised atop a tripod base, each of the three legs ornately scrolled and pierced and finished with moulding imitative of grasping acanthus leaves. The central column, which features three sides carved with rosettes and other foliate motifs, supports an upper three-footed stem, likewise detailed with classicising acanthus leaf forms. The mouth of the torchère flares widely, its lip richly moulded. The wood throughout is finely carved and warmly gilt.
