This large Minton majolica charger is designed in the late 19th Century English Neoclassical style. The charger presents a painted portrayal of two cherubim cavorting on a grey ledge against a deep blue background. This central blue panel is bordered by a yellow encompassing band containing swallows and floral sprays. The style is painterly, the brushstrokes visible in a highly pleasing manner.
The piece is painted by one W. J. Goode after an original design by William Stephen Coleman, as evidenced by the signed cartouche on the reverse. Coleman was a leading English painter and book illustrator who worked for Mintons in the latter 19th Century, executing designs for the company—the present piece being an excellent example of the artist’s work.
