This highly unusual pair is comprised of a clock and a barometer, the case of each carved in a conforming manner from wood and warmly gilt. The style is that of Louis XVI, an ornate Neoclassicism infused with foliate motifs, such as the acanthus swags that drape about the centre of each, or the pinecone and acanthus leave drop finials at the bottom. Each case is decorated with typically Louis XVI style forms and motifs, including gadrooning, faux columns and pilasters, and urns. The clock case is inset with a circular enamel clock dial, the dial inscribed with Roman numeral hour marks and Arabic numeral five-minute marks, while the barometer case is inset with a white enamel dial marked, in French, with various indications of weather conditions.
