'Love Lyrics,' a very fine romantic Italian genre painting by Paoletti
By Paoletti, Antonio Ermolao (Italian, 1834-1912)
£55,000
Distinct from much of his oeuvre, this beautiful genre painting of a romantic tryst in a grand interior represents Paoletti at his most accomplished and refined.
Mounted in a beautiful giltwood frame, this wonderful Italian genre painting is by Antonio Ermolao Paoletti and represents an unusual yet highly desirable departure from his usual oeuvre.
It depicts a pair of lovers or a couple of young aristocratic figures in an elegant drawing room interior. The Rococo style of the figures, and the sumptuous interior lined with gilt furniture, approximate that of another Italian genre artist, Arturo Ricci, and marks a break from Paoletti's usual subjects of children and youthful figures playing besides the canals of Venice.
Nevertheless, Paoletti has overwhelmingly succeeded in transfering his art to a figural interior scene. The dress, expressions, and setting of the composition are beatifully rendered; the fine canvas is complemented by the exceptionally grand giltwood frame. To the reverse there are fragments of the original inscribed label, and the signature 'A. Ermolao Paoletti' can be seen in the lower left.
