Orientalist cold-painted bronze letterbox by Bergman
By Bergman, Franz Xaver (Austrian, 1861-1936)
£45,000
This remarkable letterbox, formed to resemble an ancient Egyptian building, is a superb piece of Orientalist sculpture by the Austrian metalworker Franz Bergman.
The cold-painted bronze letterbox is formed in the manner of an ancient Egyptian building. The building is situated on a naturalistically rendered base, upon which reside three Arab men, one of whom guards the building while the other two attend to camels. The Egyptian building rises high above the men below, its surface profusely adorned with Egyptian style bas-reliefs and hieroglyphs—and its top featuring an open slot for letters. The bronze throughout is superbly cast and finished, the cold-painting process allowing for the minutest of details to be rendered.
The piece is marked to the reverse with Bergman’s foundry seal.
