Description

The grandiose decorations on this pair of vases have been expertly rendered in beautiful detail by the skilled artisan Desprez, and reference the artistic opulence and grandeur of the Empire period at the start of the 19th Century.

The vases take typical ovoid form and feature waisted necks on flared bases. They are similarly decorated: each with a dark Sevres-blue and gilt ground and mounted ormolu bands. The necks feature a gilt eagle and the bases are decorated with the letter 'N', for Napoleon, as well as a plaque reading '1807'.

The vases are further mounted on square ormolu plinths with canted angles. The ovoid body of each vase is painted with a landscape scene depicting a Napoleonic battle, with Napoleon at the centre of each composition shown seated on his horse. Each scene is signed 'H. Desprez' at the lower part.
