Description

This charming pair of patinated bronze figures is by the celebrated Belgian sculptor Victor Rousseau. Rousseau was famous in his own day for his work in bronze and as a medalist, serving for over twenty years during the early 20th Century as a professor of sculpture at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels.

The present pair depicts a young boy and girl. Each figure is raised upon a circular bronze plinth above a veined marble base. Both figures stand in naturalistic poses while they engage in music making. The boy plays a flute while the girl holds a music book aloft, their postures and the textures of their clothing skilfully rendered.

Each work is signed “Rousseau”.
