This magnificent set of four upholstered X-frame stools was made around 1840 in Italy. Each stool is of an identical, refined design.
The upholstered seat is covered with a luxurious green fabric adding a pop of colour to the pieces. The edge trims are of a similar colour, joined together with strips of ivory-coloured thread. The same fabric and trim are used for the plush, seat cushion, where two large tassels hang from each corner.
The frame of the stools is expertly hand-carved from walnut. Each stool has a plain frieze, beneath which are shaped and scrolled opposing X-form supports. These are centred by a roundel, an elegant design feature. A ring-turned baluster cross stretcher joins together the two x-shaped walnut pieces.
