Style of Sèvres (French, founded 1738)
This magnificent three-piece garniture is beautifully crafted from Sèvres style porcelain delicately painted with intimate scenes of aristocratic courtship.
This superb set is comprised of a central jardinière and a pair of flanking vases. Each of three pieces in the set is wrought from Sèvres style porcelain mounted with ormolu, with the manner of the painted decorations being inspired by the Rococo, while the ormolu mounts are distinctly Neoclassical.
The jardinière features an oval profile cobalt blue porcelain bowl, which is mounted to the rim with a pierced ormolu gallery and set to each side with elaborate ormolu handles. The front of the jardinière features a tooled gilt cartouche containing a painted scene of three courtly figures in a pastoral landscape, while the reverse features a less elaborate tooled gilt cartouche containing a landscape scene. The body of the jardinière is supported by a shaped porcelain socle, adorned with tooled partial gilding. The circular foot of the socle is raised on an ormolu base.
The pair of flanking vases is similarly decorated, with each cobalt blue porcelain vase featuring conforming ormolu handles and a conforming ormolu base. Each vase features a gilt framed courtly painting to the front, and a landscape to the reverse. The vases are topped with domed porcelain lids, which are surmounted by ormolu finials.
The painting on the front of the jardinière is signed ‘Lancret’, while each of the three pieces features a spurious Sèvres mark to its underside.
