Description

This charming cold-painted bronze group by Franz Xaver Bergman depicts a donkey and its rider. The donkey is naturalistically rendered, with the bronze finished with a dappled surface imitative of hair. The donkey is saddled, and his rider, with cane in hand, stands by its side. The colour palette is bright and vibrant, and the quality of the finish is excellent. As with many early twentieth century Viennese bronzes, the subject matter is Orientalist.

The bronze is marked ‘B’ for Bergman and stamped with an indistinct model number.
