Description

This superb figurative lamp is by Anton Chotka, a leading producer of cold-painted bronze goods in Vienna during the late 19th and early 20th Centuries.

The lamp depicts an exceptionally detailed scene of a busy, open-plan coffee shop. The building itself is distinctly Islamic in style, with crescent Moon finials and an eastern-style dome. Below, several figures drink coffee and smoke huqqa pipes surrounded by furniture in the Moorish style, such as the octagonal centre table.

The colour palette is subdued yet varied, with rich reds and gilt tones predominating. As is typical of Chotka, the quality of the bronze casting the cold painting is exceptional.

The work is signed ‘Chotka’ to the base.
