Antique Clocks

The exquisite collection of antique clocks presented by Mayfair Gallery includes some of the best 19th century timekeeping wares on the market. Our varied selection of decorative timepieces are suitable for a desk, wall, mantel, or even a pocket.

Whilst the history of timekeeping dates to antiquity, the origins of the clock as we know it can be found in the Renaissance, with the invention of the mechanical clock. Following the creation of the pendulum clock in the 17th century, the 19th century in particular saw several major advancements in the clockmaking world that increased both the accuracy and portability of timekeeping devices: the beginning of the 19th century saw the invention of the carriage clock. With the first models designed for Napoleon, these smaller pieces were made for travel, and housed in a handled case for easy transportation.

One of the most favoured types of antique clocks is the mantel clock – devices of varying sizes designed to sit upon a mantelpiece. A particularly exquisite type of mantel clock emerged during the era of the Napoleonic Empire, elaborately decorated with Neoclassical influences. These extraordinary pieces were designed in the Empire style, and would typically combine ornate clock cases with famed classical sculptures, all seated upon a decorative plinth with frieze decoration. Examples from the Mayfair Gallery collection include works by the prestigious French clock-making firm Le Roys et Fils, as well as famed metalworkers such as Barbedienne and Deverberie.

Mayfair Gallery also presents a large number of stunning antique clock sets. Comprising of a central timepiece accompanied by ornamental side pieces such as candelabra, these magnificent sets often bring together a host of different materials and forms. Particularly exquisite examples include sculptural Neoclassical sets by Picard, as well as porcelain works in the style of the esteemed Sèvres manufactory.

A particular highlight of Mayfair Gallery’s clock collection is our selection of luxury pocket watches, made by esteemed Swiss makers. At the crossroads of science, art and technology, the skills required for mechanical watchmaking are a true craft, and Mayfair Gallery’s selection are some of the best examples the contemporary market has to offer.

From the impressive grandeur of a tall grandfather clock to the delicacy of a carriage clock inlaid with precious elements, our beautiful selection of fine antique clocks contains works in all ranges of sizes, materials, and styles.
